Leaking and unstable 2020-2021

I have been creating unstable and vulnerable moulds from latex and other materials, and seeing what happens when they are used to try and hold things together, stop things leaking out. This work has led me to experiments with mono printing, a technique that has proved interesting in allowing me to take risks, create a mess and see what is visible and what is hidden inside.

All of my work is rooted in experimenting and playing with different materials and finding out what emerges for me, in a free associative way, looking for surprises and revelations, rather than plotting outcomes from the start. Strong themes growing out of the work this are loss, ageing, the attempt to ‘look good’ and remain standing and moving, while inside there is fear and collapse. This has felt particularly resonant in relation to my father’s degeneration through dementia. I have made a number of short films this year in order to pull together some of these themes.

Working with fragile, unstable materials in ways that don’t follow the rules, and creating prints that aren’t neat and controlled has led to frequent chaos, leakages, huge mess, disappointments and feelings of anxiety. In this way, the process itself mirrors what it aims to explore - the chaotic, unknown nature of the search for meaning in a messy, unpredictable and, ultimately, transitory life.
