Bones and Angels 2019

“Sometimes we use our minds not to discover facts, but to hide them…One of the things the screen hides most effectively is the body, our own body, by which I mean the ins of it, its interiors. Like a veil thrown over the skin to secure it’s modesty, the screen partially removes from the mind the inner states of the body, those that constitute the flow of life as it wanders in the journey of each day.”

— Antonio Damasio, The Feeling of What Happens

“I’m about what goes through people’s minds, the stuff that people don’t want to admit or face up to. The shows are about what’s buried in people’s psyches”

Alexander McQueen - Savage Beauty

This series of prints grew out of Carl Jung’s work on the collective unconscious, and the idea that the body is not only full of viscera, excretions, blood and bones, but also the repository for the soul. This was the beginnings of an exploration into what we choose to show and what we need to hide - the vital and complex relationship between our visceral selves and our ‘angelic’ selves. Cave painting symbols allude to the deep and primordial relationship we have with being seen and understood through creativity, and to the deeper parts of our psyche.
